The
Advantages of Hard Chromium Plated, Low-temperature, Superconductor Wire
Hard Chrome Plating Consultants, Inc. has chromium plated
Superconducting wire for the International Thermal Nuclear Experimental
Reactor (ITER) Fusion Program and the Tokamak Physics Experiment (TPX).
We have also plated Superconducting wire for several companies building
Superconducting Energy Magnetic Storage Devices (SEMS). In addition, we
can plate wire made from the following base metals:
- nickel
- copper
- steel
- stainless steel
- exotic metals
Chromium
Plating Eliminates Problems Associated With Cabling Bare Copper
Wire used to build the best quality superconducting magnets should be
chromium plated. Any cost associated with chromium plating the wire is
offset by the ease of cabling and eliminating defects. We are sure it
will eliminate the problems that have surfaced when cabling bare copper.
Superior
Plating Quality
The adhesion of chromium to the wire is excellent. After plating, you
can bend the wire into a tight eye without any flaking of chromium deposits.
Our plating does not cause chrome nodules or roughness; even on wire with
a chromium layer that is .001 inch thick. Our plating is as bright and
smooth as surface finish on the bare wire allows. In 1983 we invented
the worlds first successful, reel-to-reel, wire-plating machine. This
machine can successfully plate long lengths of wire (up to 25 thousand
feet without breaking the wire.) You should expect superior quality plating
because we have over 50-years of chromium plating experience.
Superior
Wire Integrity
Chromium has the lowest coefficient of friction of any metal (0.13). The
low coefficient of friction reduces the pulling, crimping, and deformation
of the cross section while cabling. Superior wire integrity means there
is no loss of current carrying capacity in the wire after it has been
plated.
Chromium
Plated Layer Provides an Electrical Insulator
At the low superconducting operating temperatures required, the chromium
plated layer also acts as an electrical insulator.
Chromium
Plated Layer Helps to Maintaining Low Surface Temperatures
Chromium plated wire will not fuse together when it is heat treated. There
is no loss of ampere turns in the cable. Even if the cable is not heat
treated. Cabling bare wire is subject to galling which can cause breakage
both before and after cabling. Wire that has been chrome plated has higher
thermal conductivity than unplated wire (approximately 40% higher than
steel.) The chromium plated layer aids in maintaining low surface temperatures.
About Hard

Hard Chrome Plating Consultants, Inc. is classified as a Women Owned Small
Business and therefore eligible for Small Business Set Aside Contracts.
Our present capacity (12/99) to produce chromium plating on wire is 80,000,000
(80 million) feet per year. We can quickly increased our capacity to meet
the quantity you need. We can plate a short run of your wire at reasonable
cost. Free short samples of wire are available for your inspection. Call
for wire reel specifications and price quotes.
